User Experience Manager leading a team of 4 to 15 designers, covering 4 primary products, with user-centered design thinking. Instilling evidence-based designing, where possible, with validation from prototypes and lean design processes. Advocating across functional teams; Engineering, Strategy, QA, Support, Sales – to increase awareness and the importance of UX methodologies and their benefits to the business and products. Sizable challenge, with equal rewards
Skills: iOS, Android, Web, User Experience, Product Management, Creative Direction, Design Thinking, UX Strategy, User Research, Lean UX Design, Prototyping, Usability Testing
Compensation Requirements: Current base salary is $135K + stock options + healthcare + bonuses + 401K. Would want $150K + healthcare + working from home to make a move.
Location Requirements: The ideal situation would be a job that lets him work from home for a good amount of time. He’s also been looking in NYC and UT for jobs that let him work from home (in Bucks County) for a few months at a time and then come into the office every once in a while. He’s from UT, so they go there to visit occasionally.
Interview Notes: Built up the UX team/design team from 4 designers to 15 designers (currently 10). Doing one-on-ones, managing, firing, doing design critiques, leading design thinking, setting the vision, and doing reviews. Three top strengths include (1) selling the vision, (2) being able to take different bits of information/requirements, then easily distill and understand the problem and create a workable solution with only knowing a little information, and (3) connecting well with teams (he really tries to lead the team instead of just managing them).
Lives in Bucks County. Recently closed on a new house. Currently commuting about an hour each way to Conshohocken. He likes what he’s doing and where he’s at right now, but he’s passively looking for opportunities. There are two main drivers behind his desire to change jobs. The first is moving to a company where more value is given to the UX discipline. Where he’s at, UX has always been an afterthought, and that presents challenges. He won’t be able to grow the team and put in place managers anytime soon because UX will never be invested enough to grow to that size even though it’s needed. He wants to go to a company where more value is placed on UX so he can grow a team and go further. The second driver is moving to a company where he could eventually move to director or VP role. He’ll never be able to move to that kind of role in his current company. Security is important, so he’s more interested in larger companies/startups (>50 people).
